Johnson Community Housing Celebrates Groundbreaking

Area renters and the construction industry will benefit from the new apartments now under construction in Johnson on the School Street site formerly owned by the Vermont Electric Cooperative. The $6.3 million Johnson Community Housing development will construct 10 apartments for seniors and 14 apartments for families. The project, developed by the Lamoille Housing Partnership (LHP) and Housing Vermont, will also rehabilitate two duplexes located at 334 Lower Main Street and 71 Mack Mudgett Drive, all in Johnson.

“This development will have several winners,” said LHP Chair Michael Wickenden. “Working families and low- to moderate-income seniors will benefit from attractive and affordable housing, the local economy will get a boost from the construction work, and the property stays on the town’s tax roll,” Wickenden said.

The May 12 ground breaking ceremony included the recognition of the multiple funding sources needed to carry out this ambitious project.

“Union Bank welcomes the opportunity to participate as a lender and equity investor,” said Karyn Hale, Bank Vice President.  “We’ve worked with both LHP and Housing Vermont on other developments in our Lamoille County service area. We look forward to the successful completion of this project,” she said.

Other funders include the Vermont Housing Finance Agency, the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, Brownfields Redevelopment Fund, the Vermont Department of Economic, Housing and Community Development, and Efficiency Vermont.

Wright and Morrissey is the general contractor and Gossens Bachman Architects designed the apartments.

Construction is slated for completion in December. Those interested in renting apartments should contact Carrie Lee, Alliance Property Management at (802) 899-3400 or 877-321-3400.
